Happy Birthday FLOTUS! (Harper’s Bazaar)
The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, turned 50 yesterday. Harper’s Bazaar (US) takes a look at her most stylish moments.
Claire Huxtable was not just the glue that held the fictional Huxtable clan together on “The Cosby Show.” She was boss.
Gwendolyn Boyd, the first female president of Alabama State University, agreed to a $300,000/year contract that, surprisingly, included a clause stating “as long as Boyd is single and president of the university — and residing in the president’s house on campus — she cannot ‘cohabitate with any person with whom she has a romantic relation’.” Whoa.
While Boyd, who is single and a minister, was not bothered by the language and signed the contract without legal counsel, her willingness to abide by such a stipulation has caused a stir. Apparently, no preceding university president had to sign such a clause, and some experts are questioning its legality.
Right before the Academy Award nominations revealed that no female directors were nominated this year, director Lexi Alexander, who received an Oscar nomination for her short film Johnny Flynton in 2003, wrote on her blog about the rampant sexism in the film industry. “There is no lack of female directors,” Alexander wrote. But there is a huge lack of people willing to give female directors opportunities.” She calls out studios and their executives who constantly state how important it is to hire women,”but in reality, if they wanted to make things different, they would have done it already.” You tell ’em!
United States President Barack Obama nominated Staci Michelle Yandle to become the second-ever out black lesbian federal judge. She is “Obama’s pick for the district court for the Southern District of his home state of Illinois.” Politico says if confirmed, Yandle would be “the first African-American judge ever on that court, and the first openly gay judge in the 7th Circuit, which covers Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.”
Enjoy your week ahead!
